VICA "How to Apply" Workshop
Attention Virgin Islands Arts Community:
Virgin Islands Council on the Arts (VICA) is conducting a series of “How to Apply” workshops for the August 31, 2008 grant submission deadline. Information on project and budget development will be discussed in detail. First time applicants are encouraged to attend.

Poetry Out Loud
| 16-year-old Shawntay Henry, from St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands captured the audience with her poetry recitations and was named the 2008 Poetry Out Loud National Champion. Along with her title, Henry, a 10th grade student at Charlotte Amalie High School, receives a $20,000 scholarship prize. Henry was among 12 finalists and 52 state champions from around the country who participated in the third annual national poetry recitation contest on April 29, sponsored by the Poetry Foundation and National Arts Endowment in Washington, DC. Henry, was the first student from the Virgin Islands to compete in the national Poetry Out Loud competition, which was sponsored by Virgin Islands Council on the Arts. |

Bid Read
VICA has received its second grant to promote the “Big Read”. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The 2009 Big read selection is A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursala K. Le Guin.
Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea cycle has become one of the best-loved fantasies of our time. The windswept world of Earthsea is one of the greatest creations in all of fantasy literature, frequently compared with J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth or C.S. Lewis's Narnia. The magnificent saga begins with A Wizard of Earthsea, continues in The Tombs of Atuan and The Farthest Shore, and concludes with Tehanu — each book a treasure of wisdom, wonder, and literary wizardy. |

Often times the council is asked to recommend artists for projects or performances; we have therefore developed an Artist Registry which is used as a referral tool. It also functions as our mailing list and a readily available source of contact with you.

2009 Artist Calendar
Virgin Islands Council on the Arts creates a calendar each year which highlights the work and projects of our grantees. The deadline to submit pictures and information is July 11, 2008. If you are interested in being selected as one of our spotlighted artist on next years calendar, please contact Monique Walters, Grants Officer at 340-774-5984.
